Elegant for a Smaller Set
It is very difficult to find an elegant chess set in a 3″ king size. I dislike the “wild” knight of many Staunton sets, so I looked at dozens of sets. The most beautiful knights only come in 4″ or larger sizes, such as Camelot, Savano, and most bridle sets, and these would not fit on the inlaid board I was wishing to match. I’m a bit fussy about the shape of other pieces as well–the rook should have distinct turrets, the bishop the suggestion of a bishop’s hat, the king and queen should be clearly distinct from each other, etc. The set needed to be wood to go with the board, but 2-tone was highly desirable. This set was the right size, right look, and, just as important, the right PRICE for what I wanted! After a dizzying search and finally finding the “right” set, I didn’t even remember to see if extra queens were included.
When I got the set, I was AMAZED at how much more beautiful it is than the pictures! Each piece has wonderful detailing with a fern motif at the base. They are certainly “high gloss” and have a quality feel to them. The felt pads are thick and seem securely glued to the bottom. I was so excited as I unwrapped them (very well packaged!) to find that indeed there were extra queens!
I am delighted to have such beautiful pieces to complement the inlaid wood board. While in combination, they are a stunning display piece, they are also ready for play, with only a quick glance needed to identify any given piece. I look forward to many games with this showpiece set!
